sculpture

I have created the following sculptures directly from the life model, or from life drawings, which I have then developed and modified into expressive forms

Most of the sculptures are preceded by drawings I have made from the life model to explore the qualities of different poses and to become familiar with the structure, shape and form of the model.

I am also showing some recent examples of sculptural pieces where I am concerned with interpreting the human condition, inspired by current political or social events.

I created the sculptures using stoneware ceramic material, kiln-fired in two separate firings. The second firing is to maximum temperature and the figures are therefore sufficiently durable to withstand outdoor, year-round temperatures.

Between firings, on some of the pieces, I use oxides, generally red iron and manganese dioxide, which I dilute in water and rub or brush into the clay then wipe the surface to maximise the form. A number of the figures are coated with glaze to enhance their expressive qualities.

I have used a bronze powder mixed with other ingredients on some of the sculptures. This coating creates a good bronze imitation. I use Tiranti, well known as the sculptor’s source of materials available online or from their shop in London.

The bronze powder mix provides an excellent surface that is weather-proof providing the original clay piece has been fired up to or beyond 1220 degrees celsius.
